Kolkata formerly "Calcutta" is the capital city of the Indian state of  West Bengal . It's  also the former capital of  India . Founded as an East India Company trading post, it was India's capital under the British Raj from 1773–1911. Today it’s known for its grand colonial architecture, art galleries and cultural festivals. Kolkata is also known as "The Cultural Capital Of India" . According to the recent data published by the National Crime Record Board (NCRB), Kolkata has been named as the safest city for women in India, among a list of 19 cities.
